The spotlight is shining on the venues of the 2012 London Olympics as the dust settles on the stadiums built in Ukraine and Poland for the summer’s first sporting spectacle – the UEFA Euro 2012 football tournament. This year’s exceptional summer of sport has already entranced people around the world but fans aren’t the only ones excited. Britain’s stalling TV ad-market spend rebounded in May as advertisers invested heavily ahead of Euro 2012, a Credit Suisse survey has found.

 

Governments, too, can be swept away by sports fever. Officials often pour money into state-of-the-art venues believing if they build them, the crowds — and money — will come. But Portugal and Montreal can testify how poor planning can leave taxpayers footing big bills long after the flame has gone out.
